Toronto police have identified a man fatally stabbed in an apartment building in the west end early Sunday.
Birchfield Matthews, 43, a Vincentian/Canadian died in a trauma centre, police said in a weekend news release. Matthews is Toronto’s 14th homicide victim of the year.
Matthews was stabbed inside an apartment building near Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue W. Police responded to a medical call from the area just after 6 a.m.
Police said they arrested a suspect, a 29-year-old Toronto man, near the scene.
Toronto paramedics took Matthews in life-threatening condition to a trauma centre, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
A male suspect was arrested at the scene, according to police. Kenroy Samuel, 29, of Toronto has been charged with second-degree murder.
He was due to appear in a Toronto courtroom on Monday. Toronto police’s homicide unit is now investigating.
