The Guyana Teachers’ Union is asking the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Police Force to protect teachers.
It is said that a parent and a student got into a fight at the Houston Secondary School last Thursday.
In a video that has since gone viral, a teacher at the school can be seen holding a cutlass.
The Ruimveldt Police Station got a report. The teacher was set free by attorney Darren Wade.
As she was leaving police custody, the teacher told local media that “this has become the new COVID.” As an educator, she would like to see a better relationship between teachers, parents, and students so that teachers can do what they are paid to do, which is to teach the people in their care.
The teacher said that she had been attacked.
In a Facebook post, the Union said, “It’s a shame that a female teacher has to go to such lengths to protect herself at work. The same place where teachers are supposed to teach and keep students safe is also dangerous for them.
On her Facebook page, Education Minister Priya Manickchand said, “Every fight between a teacher and a parent or parents will hurt a child.” Don’t forget that. And turn down all the violent and hostile talk.”
