David Da Breo a ship maintenance worker, in Canouan and who was a patient at the Union Island hospital is now thanking God that he is alive following an alleged beating by the police which occurred at the Mayreau Hard Court on Sunday 20th October, 2019.
It was reported to News784 that police officers from Canouan went to Mayreau via the coast guard, following a report of missing monies from a yacht that was being repaired in Canouan.
According to the source, Da Breo was removed from a house in Mayreau where he stays and taken to the Mayreau Hard Court where he was allegedly beaten by law enforcement officers.
The source further told News784 that the beating allegedly took place in the dressing room area of the hardcourt, where persons heard cries and screams coming from.
According to information received, a man who is not a law enforcement officer having heard the screams, proceeded to the dressing room area and questioned the police officers about their actions. It was following his intervention that the screams and cries came to a halt.
The source further told News784 that when Da Breo and the officers emerged from the hardcourt, he could barely walk and was seen limping on one leg and subsequently collapsed.
News784 understands that Da Breo was taken to the Union Island hospital on the evening of Sunday 20th October, 2019 where he spent an hour before being discharged back into police custody.
A friend who visited Da Breo at the Union Island police station on Monday 21st October, 2019 told News784 that they could have only seen David’s face by looking through a square in the cell door.
They told News784 that David appeared to be in a lot of pain as he was crying and lamenting that he was in great pain.
It is alleged that the sum of money that was removed from the alleged ship on which maintenance work was being carried out on in Canouan, amounted to thousands of dollars. Our source also said that David and the rest of the crew do not in any way have access to the inside of the ship.
Five other workers who also engage in the ship’s maintenance were also taken into custody on Sunday night and were released earlier today.
When contacted by News784, Canouan police on Sunday night declined to verify any information regarding the alleged incident.
