Bruce highlights youth role in agricultural research

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation Hon Israel Bruce and other senior officials of the ministry joined the staff of the locally based Caribbean Agriculture and Research Institute (CARDI) on December 5th in commemorating CARDI Day 2025.

An exhibition and ceremony were held at the institute’s Field and Research Centre at Orange Hill. This day was celebrated under the theme “Bridging the gap between youths and Agriculture Research”.

Some of the objectives of the day’s event were:

To indicate the different occupations or career choices in Agricultural Research. Showcase the agricultural research activities currently ongoing on the research station, such as the World Vegetable Centre hot pepper trial, IICA living soil Lab trial, and the inter-cropping of CARDI dasheen, Samoana, IND512, and the Local (Common) with in the Musa spp of bananas and figs.

To show the different varieties of drought and black sigatoka resistant Musa species in the germplasm, and sweet potato and cassava germplasms, and to demonstrate preparation, turning, and use of compost on the farm/ field station.
