PM Says "Too Many Persons In Jail That Should Not Be"

1 Min Read

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Ralph Gonsalves during parliament yesterday said that he thought there should be alternative sentencing for certain persons, stating “too many persons that should not be put in Jail are put in jail”

“As much as my friend, the member for Central Kingstown commented on the increase, in some cases, marginal increases in the prison population, I just want to say this.

I want to say, Mr. Speaker, in so far as he editorialised, I just want to say that it is my view that too many persons who should not be put in Jail are put in Jail, I just want to say that.

The Prime Minister and Minister of National Security put out a disclaimer that he was not criticising the magistrates and judges.

“I’m not making a criticism of any particular magistrate or judge, I just make that point generally, there’s other alternative sentencing.”
