NDP reckless policies risk bringing great pain to SVG

St Vincent Opposition leader Ralph Gonsalves says he is “absolutely sure” that President Trump and his principal advisors, specifically Steve Miller, are closely monitoring the newly elected NDP government in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This scrutiny is focused on two specific policy shifts proposed by the NDP.

Gonsalves notes that the NDP intends to implement the sale of citizenship to foreigners, a move the White House has already labeled as an “inherent security challenge”. He emphasizes that the U.S., along with the UK and EU, views such programs as “unfixable” risks that could jeopardize visa-free travel or broader national security.

The NDP has long campaigned on a promise to break diplomatic relations with Taiwan to establish ties with the People’s Republic of China. Gonsalves characterizes this move as “total folly”.

Gonsalves suggest that these actions trigger the “Trump factor” because they conflict with the core tenets of the National Security Strategy (NSS) and the “Donro Doctrine”, to which he pointed to three main elements.

Checkmating China: “A primary goal of the current U.S. administration is to “checkmate” China, its only peer competitor. Gonsalves argues that any move to grant China more influence in the Caribbean—which the U.S. views as its “front yard”—will be seen as a direct challenge to American interests”.

America First and Security: “The NSS prioritizes protecting the U.S. from “hostile foreign influence” and “security challenges”.

Gonsalves explains that Trump uses both the “prospects of punishments” and the “promising of rewards” to ensure his strategic objectives are met at the least cost possible.

Regional Stability: “The U.S. wants a Western Hemisphere that remains reasonably stable and well-governed” to prevent issues like mass migration and transnational crime”

The Opposition leader suggests that the NDP’s policies are perceived by the U.S. as destabilizing elements that could introduce “malign actors” into the region.

Gonsalves warns that because of this close observation, the NDP’s policies are “unnecessary and reckless,” and they risk bringing “great pain” to the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines by inviting confrontation with a powerful, transactional hegemon.
