- Inaugural Sylvester Ambrose Simmons sailing cup slated for March 16-17.
To fill the void in the support left by the passing of Mr Sylvester Simmons of Lower Bay, Bequia, in 2022, friends of his, with the blessing of his family, set up the SYLVESTER AMBROSE SIMMONS MEMORIAL FOUNDATION which was approved in August 2023 and launched in December of the said year.
Although he held several positions in the Community (teacher, Clerk of the Bequia District Council, Rotarian, Philanthropist, inter alia) the Foundation focuses on what he was most enthusiastic: the acquisition of marine skills in the youths of the Grenadines, and the continuation of boat racing and fishing competitions as Community sports.
First on the Foundation’s 2024 calendar is the SYLVESTER AMBROSE SIMMONS CUP, an annual series of boat races on the weekend closest to St. Vincent and the Grenadines Heroes’ Day.
This year, that weekend is March 16th and 17th. The event, which takes place in Bequia, draws participants from across the State, includes boats of different classification, and young aspiring sailors from the youth clubs.
It ends with an award ceremony at De Reef, Lower Bay.
The Foundation has a strong Management Committee working within the prescribed legal framework, and with a membership currently over ninety, it is well placed to achieve the aims cited in its application to the Governor General.
