  • Commissioner of Police Unveils Strategies to Combat Gun Violence

Police Presence to Intensify in St. Vincent During Holiday Season for Public Safety

As gun violence rises in St. Vincent, Commissioner of Police Enville Williams announced new crime-fighting methods on Monday.

Williams said the new initiatives address current issues and improve their effectiveness.

“These include using the cybercrime law to track criminal activities, dismantling firearm smuggling rings, implementing a new inter-agency internal security mechanism that includes cooperation with the prisons, and ensuring that no one benefits from crime.”

Williams said the RSVGPF would increase police presence in towns and businesses throughout the holidays to ensure public safety and order.

    Timely intervention and resources matter.

“These resources have greatly improved our presence and performance. From March 1 to May 31, 17 unauthorized guns and 327 rounds of ammunition were surrendered. While the Firearm Act modifications have increased penalties for unlawful firearm possession and trafficking, this effort shows our proactive approach to reduce illegal firearms”.

Public engagement is key to fighting crime.

“The police are building the vital public-police relationship through targeted neighborhood walk-throughs and direct engagements. The police know that working with the community can be seen as harmful due to criminal elements, however, no criminal group will create or maintain a culture of terror in our communities. The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force is determined to dispel the idea that criminality is stronger than law-abiding individuals collaborating with law enforcement. This is shared duty. We will safeguard those who support justice and the law. Together, we can and will eliminate fear in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”

By carefully interpreting the Cybercrime Act, Williams said the police may now analyze and respond to criminal gang internet communication.

“This strategy gives us a significant advantage in our ongoing operations, allowing us to act decisively in unexpected ways. The details of those actions could not be mentioned in the address, but they are part of “our broader, deliberate effort to maintain our edge in the fight against crime.” Our goal is to stay ahead of public safety threats utilizing all legal measures. The police chief said the continuous activities demonstrate the police’s commitment to public safety and law and order. While we have succeeded, we are determined to develop and refine these techniques to keep up with changing criminality”.

Williams said the police will develop a crime prevention app in the first quarter of 2025 so residents may confidentially share information with police from home or anywhere. He added the police force, customs, the Port Authority, and international partners are using research-based methods to intercept arms trafficking at the nation’s ports of entry and marine boundaries.

Williams stated we are strengthening targeted operations against drug traffickers, gun offenders, and money launderers alongside the FIU and local and regional partners.

  • CELAC Summit: The fact that we are here together is a sign of progress: Gonsalves

The Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, outlined the origins and emergence of CELAC and how it has been strengthened so far.

  • ‘Policeman came into my room while I was putting on my underwear’

Annamay Lewis, who was charged with wounding Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, alleges that the head of CID Clauston Francis, entered her bedroom on August 5 while she was putting on her underwear.

Lewis made the revelation while speaking at a press conference hosted by the St Vincent Opposition party on Friday.

“When I got home from the protest, I took a shower and went to bed. While I was in a doze, I heard a knock on the door. When I got up and went to see who it was, I saw the police, several of them”.

“When I opened the door, it was Mr Francis and his men, only one lady with them . He came into the house and said, you alone living in this big house, I said yes”.

“I went back to the bedroom because I was not properly dressed. As I went back to the room to put on clothes, he came into the bedroom”.

“The lady said to him; she is putting on her clothes; when he came in, I was putting on my underwear. He said to me, you hit the Prime Minister, and he is in the hospital, you will have to come and go to make an apology to him”.

This would have been the first time Lewis was making the revelation.

Lawyer Kay Bacchus- Baptiste told NEWS784 on Friday that the disclosure by her client left her flabbergasted.

The Director of Public Prosecution on September 15 withdrew the charge against Annamay Lewis.

Lawyer Kay Bacchus- Baptiste told News784 that disclosure was not given to her on the matter.

“I am not surprised because the confession they took from my client was bogus; they force her to confess, and they have no evidence that she did throw a stone and hit the Prime Minister”.

Bacchus-Baptiste said the police have been spending an enormous amount of time not solving crime but arresting protesters in the last month.

  • Video: Jomo Thomas says he is using Ivermectin to treat COVID-19

Vincentian lawyer Jomo Thomas said he is using the controversial Ivermectin as part of his treatment for COVID -19.

Thomas was diagnosed on Monday as being COVID-19 positive.

Speaking on Boom FM, he said he first took the drug on Saturday and also on Monday.

“I have been following top scientists worldwide who say it works, and I have no problem following people who know more about these matters than I do”.

Thomas said on the weekend; he felt unwell.

“There was no pain or anything. I felt I should drive up to Stubbs and get one of those Rapid tests, and I did not do it, and on Monday, when I went in, I decided to go to the clinic and check, and it confirmed what I thought.”.

Thomas said he did not attend court on Monday and stayed home mainly on the weekend.

Thomas said his mindset about the COVID-19 has not changed even though he has contracted the virus.

“I don’t know what the basis would be for a change in mindset; I have not had any position that is outlandish that should cause a rearrangement in my thoughts, ideas or opinions”.

The FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19 in humans or animals.

According to the agency website, ivermectin is approved for human use to treat infections caused by parasitic worms, head lice, and skin conditions like rosacea.

The current evidence on the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19 patients is inconclusive until more data is available; WHO recommends that the drug only be used within clinical trials.

This recommendation, which applies to patients with COVID-19 of any disease severity, is now part of WHO’s guidelines on COVID-19 treatments.

  • SVG Protest: Husband of Opposition Senator choked by police, arrested

The husband of Opposition Senator Shevern John had to be rushed to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Thursday afternoon after he was placed in what his lawyer says was a chokehold.

Carly John was arrested by members of the Rapid Response Unit, a branch of the St Vincent police force, at a protest in the capital city of Kingstown.

Lawyer Kay Bacchus-Baptiste speaking with News784, says the situation reminds her of George Floyd.

According to US media reports, George Floyd lost consciousness after a Minneapolis police officer placed him in a chokehold. He later died.

“Mr John is now at the police station; he was released from the hospital and given medication. He is now arrested. No charges have been laid against him yet”.

Bacchus-Baptiste also told News784 that Adriana King and Patches Knights were also taken into custody.

“It seems to me that the police came to the peaceful protest to cause an escalation”, Bacchus-Baptiste said.

She said the leader of the Opposition and Vice President of the NDP met with the Commissioner of Police on Thursday to find common ground.

According to Bacchus-Baptiste, The Commissioner told the opposition leader that the police would not escalate any situation.

Bacchus-Baptiste recounted an incident that she faced earlier on Thursday afternoon.

“I am walking to the police station to visit a client, and I saw a battery of police in army fatigue with batons walking menacingly towards me, so I stood up. The police marched straight up to me, took his baton and pushed me, saying, I must go back. So I said I needed to pass, the guy shouted at me—rude police.

So I went to the other side of the road to head to the station. Another police held my hand, telling me I could not go down there (to the station). It took a senior police officer to say to him, let me go. So now I need permission to see a client. Can you imagine this in a democratic country?” Bacchus-Baptiste said.

The protest ended with a candlelight vigil opposite the parliament building.

UPDATED – 9:34:03 PM – Lawyer Kay Bacchus-Baptiste told NEWS784 that john was discharged from the Central Police Station. No charges have been laid, he was asked to present himself to the police on Friday 10 September.

  • Taiwan lauds deep friendship with SVG

Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) lauded the deep friendship between Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) on Tuesday, a few days ahead of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Both governments will celebrate the day, which falls on Aug. 15, with a series of activities signifying a desire to deepen their close cooperation in many fields, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said in a statement.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) established diplomatic relations with St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Aug. 15, 1981.

According to MOFA, the ROC Embassy in SVG is holding a photo exhibit from Aug. 9-16 in Kingstown, featuring 100 historical photos and materials depicting the fruitful bilateral cooperation between the two countries in areas such as technology, scholarship and exchange of talents.

The opening ceremony of the exhibit was broadcast live locally and attended by SVG Governor-General Susan Dougan, MOFA said.

“SVG is an important ally of Taiwan in the Caribbean region. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges on economic recovery, both countries will work hand in hand to deepen their partnership and to pursue peace and prosperity in the region,” the statement said.

In a video shared by MOFA on social media, Wu cited the Rabacca Bridge, completed in 2007; Argyle International Airport, opened in 2017; and scholarships for Vincentians in Taiwan as some of the projects that demonstrate the close cooperation between the two countries.

Wu also cited cooperation between the two countries in combating the pandemic, and Taiwan’s assistance to SVG after the eruption of La Soufrière Volcano in April as further examples of deepening relations.

Meanwhile, SVG Ambassador to Taiwan Andrea Bowman noted on the embassy’s Facebook page that aside from the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the embassy also celebrates its 2nd anniversary on Aug. 8.

She announced that the eight-day period from Aug. 8-15 would be used to celebrate these two milestones through the presentation of videos on social media from individuals and agencies that have been pivotal in the 40 year journey of the two countries.

In a video posted on the embassy’s Facebook page on August 8, SVG Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said Vincentians appreciate the partnership with the Taiwan people, whom he described as “steadfast friends.”

“Happy 40th anniversary, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Taiwan. Let’s have another 40 years of successful, warm and friendly relations,” Gonsalves said.

  • St Vincent’s PM Ralph Gonsalves Injured During Protest In Kingstown

The Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines Dr Ralph Gonsalves, was injured in the capital city of Kingstown earlier this evening.

The Prime Minister attempted to make his way through an angry mob demonstrating against a proposed amendment to the Public Health Act when he was struck by an object.

“I suspect it is not life-threatening, it is something that needs to be addressed by health officials,” said Sehon Marshall, a spokesman for Gonsalves, in an interview with Jamaica-based outlet Nationwide News.

Questions have already arisen as to why the Prime Ministers’ security team would allow him to walk through the crowd of demonstrators.

A protester was also injured earlier this afternoon when the protest for a moment turned violent; the man was taken to the hospital.

Trade Unions on the island said the amendment to the Public Health Act would make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for specific categories of workers.

The Government said there would be no mandatory vaccination.
