Head of the Tourism Authority Glen Beache and other government officials are pushing ahead in their quest to get direct airlift to and from St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
Beache who is currently in Canada met with officials from Air Canada at 1.30 Pm on Friday to discuss the possibility of having direct flights services via the new Argyle International Airport (AIA).
Beache noted that Friday’s meeting was not the first with Air Canada. He stated that they have previously met with, WestJet, JetBlue, American Airlines, Sunwing, British Airways and Virgin among many others.
He said, “you name it and we have spoken to them, we have been in talks with airlines all over the world for at least five years now, so it’s not a lack of effort”.
“ I can tell you in October of 2015 we did have West Jet and Jet Blue ready to come in St Vincent.
In December of 2016, we did have a contract signed with American Airlines ready to come into St Vincent. Unfortunately, we missed those dates”.
Beache said construction is never easy and noted that though it’s not an excuse, persons also need to understand how certain things happen, whether it’s the shortage of material or the weather, among others.
He said, “What the airlines look for are the things we have in place and what we will continue to put in place. He noted that airlines would not be coming to SVG simply because they love the island.
The bottom line is, he said, if they can’t make money they are not coming. The Tourism Director also indicated that infrastructural developments, such as rooms, are high on the agenda for the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
