ANOTHER HISTORIC MOMENT FOR SVG NETBALL ASSOCIATION
In another historic occasion, on Thursday 14th September 2023, two young netballers who competed in the Bank of SVG (BOSVG) National Netball Tournament received a two-year scholarship valued at EC$4,000.00 each from the BOSVG through the SVG Netball Association.
The candidates emerged as the successful awardees after the deadline of 31st July 2023, which saw eight applications being submitted. Phiunza La Borde of Netters Netball Team and Angelle Jackson of Blaze Strikers became the recipients of this historic and inaugural scholarship program.
Both young ladies will pursue studies at the SVG Community College in the associate degree program in Business Studies and General Studies respectively.
Upon receiving her scholarship award, Angella, expressed her gratitude to both BOSVG and the SVG Netball Association for giving her this great opportunity and assured both entities that she will indeed make them proud.
While Phiunza was not present at the handover, her mother Mellisa Williams-Laborde thanked Almighty God for opening this door of opportunity to her daughter and gave the assurance that this scholarship will be put to good use to ensure that her daughter achieves her goals at SVGCC.
President of the SVG Netball Association said that she is pleased that the Association was able to put the mechanisms in place to ensure that this year two young netballers are given the opportunity to continue their development, not just in netball but academically. She further stated that there must be a balance between sports and academics and the inclusion of this scholarship program in the BOSVG’s sponsorship is a demonstration of their commitment to the holistic development of the nation’s youth.
BOSVG’s Consumer Relations and Marketing Manager, Patricia John said “BOSVG takes delight in this first disbursement in our Netball scholarship which is awarded to the top female performer who qualifies for college. This year we disbursed two scholarships of $4000 each to compensate for the absence of a tournament to find a viable candidate in 2022. This partnership goes to the heart of the values we subscribe to at BOSVG and we take this opportunity to congratulate Phiunza LaBorde and Angelle Jackson on this (first time) achievement, and to thank them for allowing BOSVG to be part of their journey. We wish you success.”
This scholarship program will continue throughout the life of the partnership with BOSVG and the SVGNA. The SVG Netball Association wishes the recipients a successful two years of studies at the SVG Community College.
