Sir James: We Don’t Want Any Gulag In St Vincent

4 Min Read

Gulag:  Soviet forced labor camp system which reached its peak during Joseph Stalin’s rule from the 1930s to the 1950s. The term is also commonly used in the English language to refer to any forced-labor camp in the Soviet Union, including camps that existed in post-Stalin times.

The camps housed a wide range of convicts, from petty criminals to political prisoners. Large numbers were convicted by simplified procedures, such as NKVD troikas and other instruments of extrajudicial punishment. The Gulag is recognized as a major instrument of political repression in the Soviet Union.

Former Prime Minister Sir James Mitchell said that P.R Campbell did not give an all clear to the motion of confidence brought about by the government, but an all-clear for the holding of a budget debate.

Sir James made this observation will speaking on Boom FM earlier this month, with host Dwight Joseph.

“ He gave precedence to a budget debate as I understand it, a budget debate must have precedence over a vote of no confidence motion, In my book, you can be wrong, I respect P.R thinking, but in my book am making my case before the jury”.

“ A motion of no confidence decides whether a government is there are not, you have to establish when a motion of no confidence is tabled it is incumbent on the government to prove that they have authority to bring a budget.”

Mitchell asked why did the government not want the debate, what is it that brought this confidence motion to the parliament?

“ Was the government scared of talking about the element of fear in the society, were they scared to talk about the quality of life, and that talking about the fear in society might have involved yugge Farrell”.

“come on,  they are all components of the matters relevant in the society at the time, which could have been discussed in the parliament, without interfering with the court”.

Mitchell then Segway into the Yugge Farrell matter saying that he wants Vincentians to know that you can discuss all kinds of things without interfering with the courts.

“ What is before the courts Mitchell asked of radio host Dwight Joesph, what is before the court, why was she arrested, it is important that we discuss intimidation in this society.

Sir James said he is sure that the PM isn’t not aware of how dissent was treated in Russia and other places.

He said they would pick you up before your court matter, send you to Siberia in the Gulag, and after your body is destroyed, they would destroy your mind, we don’t want any gulag in St Vincent, and we don’t want to start going down that road.

Mitchell said if Farrell wins her case she has the right to sue the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
