Her Excellency Fiona Hu Chu Fan, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St Vincent delivered remarks on Tuesday, that celebrated the 45-year diplomatic history between the two nations, Her Excellency detailed the specific contributions being handed over and outlined future technological cooperation in agriculture.
Ambassador Fan congratulated the newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister and cabinet members. She highlighted that 2024 marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which were established in 1981. She emphasized that the bond is forged by shared values such as “democracy, freedom and the rule of law” rather than just geography, She also expressed gratitude to the SVG government for its steadfast support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, particularly amidst diplomatic challenges and military threats.
The Ambassador specified the contents and value of the handover, noting that it represented a collaboration between the Taiwan government and NGOs, such as the Simply Help Foundation. The donation, valued at approximately US $500,000, included:
• A firefighting truck.
• 20,000 sacks of rice.
• Two containers of charitable goods.
She stated that these contributions embody “heartfelt solidarity” and prove that true friendship is expressed through actions that improve lives, not just words.
Ambassador Fan contextualized the fire truck donation within a wider framework of public safety and health cooperation. She mentioned recent initiatives such as: The installation of 300 CCTV cameras to improve accident response and support investigations and the construction of the Arnos Vale Acute Care Hospital. She noted that these efforts reflect a belief that a resilient nation must be “safe, prepared, and healthy”.
Aligning with Minister Bruce’s comments on technology, Ambassador Fan discussed the future of agricultural cooperation. She highlighted a newly launched “young farmer program” designed to empower the next generation with technology and innovation. She specified that this program incorporates “smart agriculture,” including IoT (Internet of Things) solutions and vertical farms.
Ambassador Fan thanked the staff at the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Social Welfare, and her own embassy team for their hard work behind the scenes. She expressed a desire for their enduring friendship to flourish, guided by shared values and solidarity.
