A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the northwestern coast of Cuba on Monday afternoon, sending widespread tremors across the Caribbean region and into the United States.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at approximately 1 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
The epicenter was located roughly 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua and 95.7 miles west-northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. While the shaking was felt extensively across Cuba, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.
The seismic event was notable for its exceptionally wide reach. In the Mexican Caribbean, heavy shaking was reported as far west as Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
Across the Florida Straits, residents throughout the Sunshine State reported feeling the tremors; accounts stretched from the west coast north of Tampa, to the east coast well north of Port Saint Lucie, and all the way down to Key West. The shaking also reached Central America, with at least one report emerging from Belize.
