Gonsalves calls on youth to immortalise Fidel Castro

One of the Caribbean’s most senior and longest serving leaders has made a clarion call to young people to study the life and ideals of Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz and immortalize the iconic Cuban revolutionary.

St Vincent & the Grenadines’ Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the call as he and other world leaders, Marxists, socialists, and historians begin to reminisce on the life of the former Cuban president who died last Friday.

“I urge the young people of the Caribbean to read and study the history and the ideals and the struggles of Fidel Castro and to see the possibilities therein, the limitations and for us to carve a better world from it,” Dr. Gonsalves said on The Big Issues on Sunday.

Antigua & Barbuda’s former prime minister, Baldwin Spencer said of Castro, “His life’s work is now legendary and his impact on the world’s civilization has been immeasurable.”

Spencer added, “His leadership was not only an inspiration to the Cuban people but was inspirational elsewhere. And his belief in the people being capable of surmounting any odds is remarkable. History has and will absolve El Commandante.”

“History Will Absolve Me” is the title of a four-hour speech made by Castro in his own defense, on October 16, 1953, when he faced the court on charges brought after he led an attack on the Moncada Barracks in Cuba.
