AS part of sweeping changes to become compliant with regulations enacted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), two regional Boxing Federations have been suspended, for at least one year, for monitoring.
The Boxing Federations of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St Kitts were on (Dec. 12) given notice of their suspension by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) following its Annual Congress.
In a press statement, AIBA said the international body will continue to monitor the activities of the two Associations over the next year until the next Congress.
Boxing has come under the microscope since the Olympics, as the IOC took control of the event at the 2021 Games in Tokyo.
That prompted the IOC to temporarily remove the sport from the 2024 Games until the AIBA gets its act together.
In the process of doing so, a number of constitutional amendments were adopted at yesterday’s Congress.
“An Extraordinary Congress of the International Boxing Association voted unanimously in favour of amending its constitution as it adopted governance reform measures. The decision came on Sunday, December 12 during an online meeting run from Lausanne. The acronym of the organization was also changed from AIBA to IBA,” the statement noted.
Among the recommendations adopted during the Congress was the annual staging of the Ordinary Congress.
