New CARICOM chairman Gaston Browne seeks 50% reduction in airport taxes

Gaston Browne, the new CARICOM chairman and prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, will propose a 50 percent decrease in regional air transport charges to his CARICOM counterparts during their meeting today.

To make the suggestion, Browne secured backing from his Cabinet.

According to the government, such a reduction would increase the demand for LIAT’s services in the Caribbean and stimulate economic growth in the area.

“Airports’ third-largest source of revenue is travel inside the Caribbean, but Covid-19 has ravaged this industry. The question is how to revitalize this vital subsector “Government officials stated in a post-Cabinet statement.
