Gonsalves with security detail

Former St Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves states that his current security arrangements are a result of a cabinet decision made early in the ULP administration’s tenure.

Gonsalves has been seen recently in videos walking about his constituency with at least two individuals from his security detail during his time as prime minister.

Speaking on Star Radio recently, Gonsalves said there are some criticisms coming from individuals within the NDP base.

“I understand that when I was walking about and there were a couple of security officers with me, I understand that that attracted some criticism from some persons from the NDP base.”

“The fact of the matter is that there was a cabinet decision a long time ago, providing for precisely this for former prime ministers and former governors-general.”

Gonsalves said the current government knows about what was offered and what was accepted.

“A committee was set up pretty early in our administration to deal with this; three persons and the NDP leadership know about what had been offered and what had been accepted and what the situation is for both, in the case of Sir James, and also in the case of my brother Arhnim.”

“So I don’t need to speak publicly about those things. Certainly not at this time. I may at some future date,” Gonsalves said.

The former prime minister said a lot of people are talking out of ignorance and wanting some kind of revenge. “Revenge for what, I don’t know,” Gonsalves said.
