Opposition Leader Ralph Gonsalves

St Vincent’s Opposition Leader Ralph Gonsalves on Wednesday articulated a comprehensive four-point strategy to challenge the current government, emphasizing a commitment to democratic principles and national progress.

Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Gonsalves acknowledged the ULP’s recent electoral setback while simultaneously expressing determination to transform this challenge into an opportunity for renewal and growth.

“We will defend the immense gains for the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, particularly for the poor and working people,” Gonsalves stated, outlining the party’s primary objectives.

The opposition leader detailed four key strategic approaches:

  1. Party Renewal: Immediately following the election, the ULP begun an internal process of revitalization and self-examination.
  2. Defending National Gains: Protecting the social and economic progress achieved for citizens across the nation.
  3. Ensuring Fairness and Justice: Highlighting and addressing perceived instances of inequity in governance.
  4. Parliamentary Opposition: Fulfilling the formal role of opposition through four critical actions:
  • Opposing government initiatives deemed contrary to national interests
  • Proposing alternative policy approaches
  • Exposing perceived wrongdoing
  • Seeking to constitutionally and legally Depose the current government

Gonsalves emphasized the importance of pursuing change through democratic means, stressing that the party’s goal is to replace the government through legitimate electoral processes.

“We are a democratic organization committed to representing the interests of our people,” he explained, underlining the party’s dedication to constitutional principles.

Gonsalves said he would perform his duty with dignity and love.
