A comprehensive assessment of fishing centres across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines found that many of the current facilities are in deplorable condition.

Minister of Fisheries Conroy Huggins said to rectify this, the administration is launching an ambitious transformation of the blue economy through massive infrastructure refurbishment projects scheduled for completion by 2028.

These initiatives aim to significantly boost the sector’s contribution to the GDP while fostering long-term wealth for local vendors and harvesters.

Huggins emphasised the importance of stakeholder engagement and sustainable resource management to maximise the potential of the nation’s vast maritime territory.

Additionally, the government has begun distributing financial relief to fishers impacted by Hurricane Beryl, ensuring they receive necessary economic support.

The strategic push, Huggins said, is to modernise the marine industry and improve the livelihoods of all citizens involved in the trade.
