Baltic Undersea Cable Incident-M. V Fitburg
The M.V Fitburg was sailing under the flag of St Vincent and the Grenadines while traveling from St Petersburg to the port of Haifa in Israel was on Wednesday detained by Finnish police.
The vessel and its 14 crew members were seized in the Gulf of Finland after the ship was suspected of damaging an undersea telecommunications cable.
Finnish authorities discovered the ship dragging its anchor in the area where the damage occurred.
Authorities in Finland have opened an immediate investigation into potential sabotage and criminal interference.
While the local service provider successfully rerouted data to maintain connectivity, the incident has heightened regional fears regarding hybrid warfare and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.
According to reports from Finland, this event follows a pattern of mysterious disruptions in the Baltic Sea, leading European and NATO officials to monitor the situation for links to international aggression.
Finnish police are currently treating the case as a major security threat while refusing to speculate on whether a foreign government orchestrated the disruption.
