Kenton Chance, St Vincent’s Ambassador to Taiwan, in response to a question regarding a future career in active partisan politics, characterized it by stating an openness to the future despite a lack of current intent.
Chance, speaking on the WEFM Activated Morning Show, stated that while entering partisan politics is “not in his contemplation” at the moment, he is “not going to say rule it out completely.”
He reasoned that “time, seasons, and people change,” noting that if he had been asked five years prior if he would be an ambassador, he likely would have said no.
Regarding the intersection of his current role and politics, he made several distinctions:
Political Nature of Appointment: Chance acknowledged that his role is a “political appointment” made by the government because they have confidence in his ability to execute foreign policy regarding Taiwan.
Non-Partisan Conduct: Despite the nature of the appointment, he emphasized that he is “not going to Taiwan as a partisan person” and stressed that his duties involve serving Vincentians (specifically students) and that they must feel they will be treated strictly as citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, rather than through a political lens.
