Deputy PM Leacock

The Minister of National Security, Major St. Clair Leacock, is facing intense scrutiny over his recently proposed crime strategies and his public response to extrajudicial killings in Vincentian territorial waters.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, ULP opposition member Carlos James blasted the National Security Minister’s proposal to grant powers of arrest to members of the cadet corps.

James pointed out that cadets are primarily secondary school students aged 16 to 17, participating in a youth development body.

Peters agreed, noting the dangers of putting teenagers in the middle of violent civilian scuffles. “You’re going to put our young cadets in that?” James asked, demanding to know where the comprehensive crime plan the NDP promised during their election campaign was.

The hosts also condemned Minister Leacock’s response to recent “kinetic strikes” (extrajudicial operations) that took place within St. Vincent’s maritime borders.

After remaining silent for weeks, Leacock reportedly held a press briefing where he suggested the country must be careful in calling out the United States regarding these territorial breaches due to the reliance on foreign visas and remittances.

James labeled this stance “irresponsible” and “weak,” arguing that the government should utilize international law and existing extradition treaties if foreign nations want to pursue suspected criminals in Vincentian waters.

“If I was his Prime Minister, I would immediately remove him as Minister of National Security,” James stated, characterizing the minister’s actions as cowering.
