ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING, ISLAND SERVICES

(Infrastructure & Operations)

The Assistant Director of Engineering will support the Director in overseeing island-wide infrastructure, mechanical, and marine operations.  This senior role requires a proven leader who builds high‑performing teams, delivers measurable gains in productivity and efficiency, and provides strong financial stewardship. The successful candidate will work with other discipline leads, own preventive maintenance strategies for residential properties, and act as the Director’s principal deputy.  They will have remote/island ops experience; strong financial and capex planning skills; leading large teams; technical expertise in utilities, maintenance, mechanical and marine operations; familiarity with local regulatory frameworks.

Essential Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Act as the primary liaison between the Director of Engineering and operational teams, ensuring seamless execution of strategic directives and deputizing for the Director during absences to maintain continuity in leadership.
  • Experience and skill in the development and implementation of detailed departmental budgets, capital expenditure plans, and preventive maintenance strategies, ensuring alignment with long-term operational goals and cost efficiency.
  • Proven track record in developing a structured team-building strategy that prioritizes employee growth, succession planning, and performance management while meeting operational demands with a focus on productivity and morale.
  • Lead the Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance, and Marine teams to ensure timely delivery, quality control, and adherence to health and safety standards.
  • Lead and take primary accountability for Property Maintenance Services, including homeowner liaison, daily supervision, preventive and reactive maintenance for all contracted residences.
  • Deliver in‑house maintenance services for Jumby Bay Island Company assets, and emergency response coverage.
  • Ensure hurricane preparedness and response planning for all residential properties and Island Services.

Essential Competencies

  • Proven, measurable improvements in team performance (e.g., PM compliance, reduced downtime, lower maintenance cost).
  • Demonstrated success by developing technical leaders and succession plans.
  • Strong commercial ownership: budgeting, cost‑savings, procurement and labour optimization.
  • CMMS leadership with KPI delivery (PM completion, MTTR, backlog reduction).
  • Practical technical judgment across island/remote systems to assess risk and contractor work.
  • Track record delivering maintenance projects to scope, schedule and budget.
  • Effective stakeholder and crisis leader with a solid H&S/compliance record.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in remote/private‑island or similarly isolated operations (essential); prior Caribbean assignments required.
  • Minimum 8 years progressive engineering leadership, including managing teams of 20+ (direct or indirect).
  • At least 5 years hands‑on experience with electrical systems and water/wastewater plant operations.
  • Minimum 5 years managing construction projects and capital programs.
  • Minimum 5 years in facilities management for high‑end residential/resort environments, overseeing medium‑sized teams.
  • Competence with maintenance and remote‑operations systems (CMMS, condition monitoring, PLC/SCADA) preferred.
  • Strong technical software literacy (Excel, Word and relevant diagnostic/control tools).
  • Experience collaborating with procurement, finance and external vendors on contracts, vendor management and project delivery.
  • Technical diploma/degree in engineering or equivalent; relevant certifications preferred.
  • Familiarity with Antigua & Barbuda laws and regulations a plus.
