Diplomatic exchange highlights island nations’ vulnerabilities

On June 8th, H.E. Ambassador Kenton X. Chance made a courtesy visit to H.E. Anjanette Kattil, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to Taiwan today at a SIDS Diplomatic Meeting.

Both diplomats spoke about common issues of concern to both Island Nations. Major emphasis was placed upon the growing effects of climate change and the urgent need for the sustainable management of oceans.

Ambassadors from the two countries agreed that SIDS are uniquely vulnerable. Both stressed the importance of continued International Cooperation to help alleviate the impact of extreme weather conditions, environmental degradation, and increasing sea levels.

In their discussion, both Ambassadors acknowledged that Oceans play an important role in maintaining the livelihoods and economies of island communities as well as their cultural heritages.

They encouraged and advocated for the promotion of Marine Resource Conservation and Sustainable Use.

Also, they identified Collective Advocacy and Strategic Partnerships will be key to promoting the interests of SIDS within Regional and International Forums.

The meeting ended with a Mutual Reaffirmation of Commitment to each other.

Both Ambassadors agreed to Strengthen Bilateral Relations and Maintain Close Cooperation on their Shared Priorities which Include Climate Resilience, Ocean Conservation, and Sustainable Development.
