May and June of 2026 marked a season of outstanding achievements for students from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines studying in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Across multiple prestigious universities, Vincentian scholars earned their degrees, secured top academic honors, and showcased their leadership, cultural pride, and athletic prowess. The Embassy of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, led by H.E. Ambassador Kenton X. Chance and other officials, was present across the country to celebrate these monumental milestones.

The graduation season was highlighted by Desrenique Blake, who earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Asia University in Taichung on May 30, 2026. In recognition of her exceptional academic record and leadership, Blake was selected to deliver the commencement address on behalf of the international student body. She spoke on the challenges and triumphs of the academic journey, urging her peers to “remain resilient in the face of adversity” and reminding them that obstacles are “opportunities for growth and personal development”. Minister Counsellor Dr. Elroy Wilson, representing the Embassy, praised Blake as an exemplary representative of her home country.

At Ming Chuan University International College (MCUIC), Kevie Eston Charles Frederick Jr. (傅查斯), President of the Vincentian in Taiwan Association (VITA), graduated with a Bachelor of Science in International Business and Trade on June 7, 2026. Frederick achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, made the Dean’s List four times, and earned three prestigious awards at his graduation: the Outstanding Academic Award, the Special Contribution Award, and the Five Virtues Award. Despite his intense academic focus, which included two TaiwanICDF Outstanding Academic Awards and a National Science and Technology Council research grant, Frederick also excelled on the track with three podium finishes in the 800m. Demonstrating his relentless drive, Frederick competed in a race in Taipei the very evening he graduated.

Vincentian scholars also made significant impacts in the arts and cultural studies. Sharleen T. Branch graduated from National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) with a Master of Arts in Art & Design. Branch, a multi-time Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Academic Achievement Award winner, received the 2026 MOFA Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Her artistic talents were heavily utilized by the Embassy; she designed the covers for the Embassy’s 2026 Graduation Yearbook and painted a piece gifted by Ambassador Chance to Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Lin Chia-lung.

Meanwhile, Nicketha Toney earned a Master of Arts in Studies of Arts and Creative Industries from Taipei National University of the Arts on June 6, 2026. Toney’s graduate research, “Repository of Resilience: The National Nine Mornings Festival and Vincentian Identity,” successfully explored and highlighted the crucial role of the cherished Vincentian cultural tradition in preserving national identity and community cohesion. Dr. Elroy Wilson commended Toney for showcasing and preserving Vincentian culture on the international stage.

The story of Shamore Charles highlights a beautiful legacy of Vincentian mentorship in Taiwan. Charles graduated on June 6, 2026, from MCUIC with a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and Diplomacy. Unlike many peers, his basketball scholarship was secured through the direct efforts of Craiglee Sam, a Taiwan-based Vincentian basketball coach. Sam himself had been one of the first international students to receive a basketball scholarship from Ming Chuan University back in 2009, making Charles’ graduation a touching example of “paying it forward”. Mrs. Symantha Chance represented the Ambassador at Charles’ ceremony to convey personal congratulations.

The graduation ceremonies were marked by a strong showing of community and family support. Rimaria Burnett (柏芮瑪), who graduated from NDHU on June 6 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Science and Finance, was joined by her mother, Mrs. Maria Burnett, who traveled specifically to Taiwan for the occasion. Ambassador Chance, who attended Burnett’s departmental ceremony, also had the distinct honor of delivering remarks at the main commencement ceremony for all graduates of NDHU, a university noted for having one of the largest Vincentian populations in Taiwan.

Whether delivering commencement speeches, preserving cultural heritage, or demonstrating academic and athletic brilliance, the class of 2026 has proven that Vincentian students in Taiwan are leaving an indelible mark on their host country and paving the way for future generations.
