Two educational institutions in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) have temporarily suspended classes following confirmed outbreaks of the coronavirus (COVID-19) among their student populations.

The Port Mourant Primary School is the latest institution to report an outbreak, with multiple pupils contracting the virus.

In response, the school’s administration posted an urgent notice on social media on Monday evening, informing parents, students, and teachers that classes would be temporarily discontinued on Tuesday.

The closure was ordered to allow the facility to undergo fumigation and sanitization. While a teacher verified the reports to Kaieteur News, the exact number of cases at the primary school remains unconfirmed, and it is currently unclear when regular classes will resume.

This development at the primary level comes just five days after the GuySuCo Training College, also located in Port Mourant, was forced to halt its activities.

The college shut down after confirming more than 20 COVID-19 cases within its dormitory. Infected live-in students were safely extracted and isolated, while the uninfected students were sent home. Classes at the GuySuCo Training College are scheduled to resume this Sunday.
