St Lucian chef Orlando Satchell awarded British Empire Medal

Renowned British-born Saint Lucian chef, entrepreneur, and community advocate Orlando Satchell has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours. The prestigious honour was bestowed upon him in recognition of his “Services to Community Services, Development and Outreach Programmes towards Alleviating Poverty”.

Widely celebrated as the founder and executive chef of the internationally acclaimed Orlando’s Restaurant & Bar in Soufrière, Satchell has spent decades using his culinary platform to drive meaningful social impact. His longstanding commitment extends far beyond the kitchen, focusing on empowering vulnerable individuals and communities through food, education, and skills development.

Throughout his career, Satchell has actively championed local agriculture by prioritizing locally sourced ingredients, thereby strengthening community-based value chains and supporting Saint Lucian farmers, fishers, producers, and small businesses. Furthermore, his initiatives have created crucial employment and mentorship opportunities within the hospitality sector. He is also a dedicated advocate for sustainable food systems and the preservation of Saint Lucian culinary heritage as a means of economic empowerment.

Responding to the historic announcement, Satchell expressed his gratitude to those who nominated, supported, and endorsed his candidacy.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive this recognition,” Satchell stated. “This award reflects the collective efforts of every person, organisation and community partner who has worked alongside me over the years. Sharing love goes beyond cooking; it’s about sharing life’s experiences with others that often go unnoticed. I have always believed that food has the power to unite people, create opportunities and uplift communities”.

While Satchell has earned global acclaim for elevating Saint Lucian gastronomy—even being dubbed the “Godfather of Caribbean Cuisine” by The New York Times—this latest honour highlights a different defining aspect of his legacy: his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others.

As Saint Lucia celebrates this moment of national pride, Satchell’s British Empire Medal serves as a powerful reminder of how entrepreneurship, when paired with purposeful leadership and social responsibility, can create a lasting impact and forge pathways out of poverty.
