Minister Bruce

In a major push to expand international agricultural trade, Minister of Agriculture Israel Bruce has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with United States-based companies Seasons Farms Fresh and Quantum Inc. to significantly expand St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ hot pepper industry.

The agreement was secured during a recent market and trade mission to California, which took place from June 5 to June 9, 2026. The MOU was officially signed by Minister Bruce on behalf of the government, Mr. Nick Bernal for Seasons Farms Fresh, and Mr. Jax Knack representing Quantum Inc..

Addressing potential concerns regarding the local supply chain specifically whether exporting peppers would create a shortage for local hot pepper sauce producer Vincy Fresh, Minister Bruce assured the public that the government’s strategy prioritizes both local food security and international market expansion.

To achieve this, the new agreement outlines comprehensive support for local growers. Seasons Farms Fresh will provide pepper seeds directly to Vincentian farmers, with the local plant and quarantine unit rigorously monitoring the imports to ensure no harmful varieties are introduced to the island’s ecosystem. Additionally, farmers will receive crucial assistance with land clearing and preparation. This builds upon recent groundwork laid by a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) consultant who spent 10 days working alongside local farmers to improve hot pepper production techniques.

Because hot peppers have a fast maturity cycle of roughly 12 weeks, farmers have the potential to yield several crops per year. However, the Ministry emphasized the need for careful coordination. Agricultural extension services and the planning unit will work closely with farmers to scale and stagger planting, preventing detrimental periods of scarcity or overproduction. This strategic scaling ensures a consistent supply for both Vincy Fresh and the new United States market.

To ensure market stability and protect the investments made into the farms, participating farmers will be required to sign individual contracts. These contracts will legally commit the growers to sell their designated pepper harvests directly to Seasons Farms Fresh. Minister Bruce explained that this framework prevents farmers from accepting slightly higher, momentary offers from independent buyers after utilizing the investor’s seeds and land-clearing resources.

In tandem with the physical agricultural expansion, technology partner Quantum Inc. is developing a digital platform to revolutionize how Vincentian farmers conduct business globally. According to the Minister, Quantum Inc. is uploading a system designed to connect local farmers directly with international buyers. Furthermore, the platform features a streamlined payment gateway that will automatically calculate individual farmers’ contributions to a shipment and instantly process their payments with the push of a button.

“We have been true to form. We have been keeping our commitment to the farmers of this country,” Minister Bruce stated, reaffirming the administration’s pledge to vigorously pursue and secure lucrative regional and international markets for local agriculture.
