ECCB highlights crucial role of its agency offices in member states

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) is underscoring the vital function of its Agency Offices across its eight member countries. These offices act as the ECCB’s “presence on the ground” and play an essential role in supporting currency operations, delivering regulatory oversight, and fostering community connection through public education and outreach initiatives.

The island of Grenada holds a significant place in the institution’s history, having been the very first member country to establish an ECCB Agency Office in November 1984. Recently featured on the bank’s public program ECCB Connects, Valene Streete—the Country Manager for the Grenada office who has been with the Bank since 2009—noted that this historic distinction remains a point of pride and a standard-bearer for the office today.

Drawing on her extensive background in banking and administration, Streete highlighted that the agency offices serve as a critical bridge connecting the central bank with local governments, financial institutions, and the general public.

Streete also took the opportunity to dispel a common public misconception about the agency’s daily operations. She clarified that ECCB Agency Offices are not commercial banks, meaning they do not provide direct banking services to everyday customers. Instead, their primary focus is strictly on supporting the central mandate of the ECCB and strengthening engagement within the member countries.

The ECCB, established in October 1983, serves as the Monetary Authority for Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

To learn more about the specific operations and community roles of the ECCB Agency Offices, the public is encouraged to watch the full episode of ECCB Connects available on the ECCB’s official Facebook page and YouTube channel.
