On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, over forty (40) participants gathered at the Orange Hill Biotechnology Center to receive training in the dynamics of the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) Hydroponics System.
The gathering included staff of the Extension and Advisory Services within the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as students and staff of the Division of Technical and Vocational Studies of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.
According to FAO Value Chain Analyst, Jefferson Jaikisoon, this new climate smart technique is being mainstreamed, and will be used for research and demonstration purposes to train technicians who can then train farmers and other interested actors along the vegetable crop value chain.
This technique is expected to improve efficiency, production, quality and ensure that market requirements are met.
Jamaican vegetable farmer, Jervis Rowe, operates a number of Greenhouses using the Nutrient Film Technique. He gave assurance of the effectiveness of the method.
