St Vincent Ministry of Health has successfully ended a decade-long vacancy by recruiting a highly experienced consulting psychiatrist to join the Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre.
During a recent health briefing, the Minister of Health announced the official appointment of Dr. Eloy Castillo, noting that St. Vincent and the Grenadines had been unable to successfully recruit and retain a psychiatrist for approximately ten years. The Minister highlighted the extensive educational commitment required for the specialty, emphasizing to the public that it takes at least four years of additional training beyond a medical degree to become a certified psychiatrist.
Dr. Castillo brings about 33 years of psychiatric experience to the nation. A Cuban national, he has an extensive background working internationally, including a previous government-to-government initiative in St. Lucia, as well as work in Venezuela. Most recently, Dr. Castillo spent a decade working in South Africa before officially relocating to St. Vincent with his family.
Addressing the public, Dr. Castillo—who noted he is a “simple guy” and prefers to simply be called “Dr. Eloy”—expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Ministry. He revealed that conversations with health officials regarding his recruitment had been ongoing for about three years before his arrival was finalized.
Dr. Castillo also commended the groundwork already established by the local mental health staff. He praised the existing “marvelous team” of young professionals for their dedication to community-based care, specifically highlighting their efforts in visiting communities, knowing patients by name, and tracking their ongoing treatment.
The Minister of Health expressed immense pride and privilege in finally securing a competent and experienced doctor for the role, stating that Dr. Castillo is now “in more ways than one, one of us”.
