Less than three months since the NDP administration brought two Bills to the Parliament of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to table what was widely considered as a self-serving attempt to change the Constitution, these same Bills have appeared on the Order Paper for the next sitting of Parliament scheduled for 2nd July, 2026.
The 2nd of July is a few days before Carnival Monday and Tuesday on the 6th and 7th of July, and begs the question: if this is an attempt on our Constitution in the heart of the Carnival season.
On the 21st April, 2026, when the NDP Administration, through the Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday, in showing the Bills, noted that there will be widespread public consultation and that the bills were placed on the Order Paper to trigger public involvement. To date, there has been no public consultation on the subject matter, yet the Bills will be on the Order Paper for the next Parliament.
Vincentians must not allow for Parliament to degenerate into a cat-and mouse play. The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land. To create uncertainty as to the reform of the Constitution is unbecoming of a politician who is a trained lawyer and, at a minimum, knows better.
