Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has formally proposed that the Caribbean Court of Justice provide a legal ruling regarding the disputed reappointment of Caricom Secretary General Dr. Carla Barnett.
The Prime Minister argues that the selection process bypassed the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, suggesting that an advisory opinion is necessary to protect the integrity of regional institutions.
While Jamaica’s leadership does not seek to overturn the appointment, Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed concern that the procedural controversy has fractured unity within the Caribbean community.
Experts view this shift toward formal legal channels as a more mature and diplomatic strategy for resolving internal friction.
The proposal seeks a definitive interpretation of regional law to restore stability and international confidence in the bloc.
