Twenty-six students from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have been afforded a unique opportunity to participate in an international leadership development programme designed to strengthen youth leadership, broaden global perspectives, and equip young Vincentians with the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to national development. This will take place during the 2026 and 2027 summer months, with an anticipated increase in student participation in 2027.
The students, primarily from Girls’ High School (GHS) and St. Vincent Grammar School, are participating in the programme as part of ongoing efforts to expose Vincentian youth to transformative educational experiences, leadership training, cultural exchange, and international networks. The initiative reflects a shared commitment among stakeholders to invest in the development of young people as future leaders, innovators, and ambassadors of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The opportunity was inspired by the engagement of Vincentian student and programme participant Siana Black and was advanced through the advocacy, partnership-building, and diplomatic efforts of Bernadette Ambrose-Black, Consul and Foreign Investment Officer at the Consulate General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in New York. The partnership was subsequently formalized through collaboration among the Consulate General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in New York, the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Leadership Initiatives, an international organization committed to youth empowerment and leadership development.
Ambrose-Black, who continues to advance programmes focused on youth empowerment, diaspora engagement, trade, investment, and international collaboration, noted:
“Our young people are among our greatest national assets. Providing them with opportunities to experience different cultures, engage with global leaders, and develop leadership capabilities is essential to preparing them for the future. These students are not only representing their schools; they are representing Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.”
In reflecting on the importance of the initiative, Minister Jackson, who officially signed the partnership agreement on behalf of the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, stated:
“As Minister of Education, I am delighted to have supported the initial discussions that have enabled these important leadership experiences for our students. This initiative reflects our Government’s deep belief in the power of youth leadership as a catalyst for national development.
We recognize that our young people must be provided with opportunities to expand their horizons, develop confidence, and engage with ideas and perspectives beyond our borders. Experiences such as this allow students to cultivate critical thinking, teamwork, innovation, and leadership skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
We are especially grateful to Mrs. Bernadette Ambrose-Black for introducing this programme and for her continued commitment to creating opportunities that empower Vincentian youth. Her efforts demonstrate the importance of partnerships in ensuring that our students can access meaningful global experiences.
I commend the students from Girls’ High School, St. Vincent Grammar School, and the other participating institutions for embracing this opportunity. They represent the promise and potential of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.”
The partnership will facilitate more than US$162,000 in scholarships, significantly reducing financial barriers and expanding access to international educational and professional development opportunities for young Vincentians.
The scholarships reflect a shared commitment by the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Leadership Initiatives to ensuring that talented and motivated students have access to world-class educational and professional development opportunities regardless of financial circumstances.
Leadership Initiatives is a United States-based nonprofit organization dedicated to developing global student leaders through experiential learning, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration. Through its unique model, students work directly with entrepreneurs in developing countries to build sustainable businesses and generate measurable economic impact.
Throughout the programme, students will participate in leadership workshops, experiential learning activities, cultural exchanges, and networking opportunities designed to enhance their understanding of leadership, service, entrepreneurship, and global citizenship.
Students will engage in activities focused on leadership development, project management, business consulting, entrepreneurship, and global problem-solving. Participants will collaborate with international teams, work alongside entrepreneurs to address real-world economic challenges, present their work to business leaders and global audiences, and build tangible achievements that support future academic and professional advancement.
The programme also provides students with practical exposure to global business practices and opportunities to engage with university faculty, business executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals from diverse sectors.
Marshall James Bailly II, Founder and Executive Director of Leadership Initiatives, welcomed the partnership and emphasized the importance of expanding access to opportunities for exceptional young leaders from the Caribbean.
“Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. We are committed to removing financial barriers so that exceptional students from the Caribbean can participate, contribute, and lead alongside their peers from around the world,” said Marshall James Bailly II.
Leadership Initiatives has a long-standing track record of measurable impact, having helped launch and scale hundreds of small businesses internationally while developing thousands of student leaders. The organization has also established partnerships with educational institutions throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the wider Caribbean region.
Importantly, through the efforts of the Consulate General and with the valuable support of its intern team, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has led regional participation in the initiative and encouraged other Caribbean countries, including Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago, to participate. This represents the first coordinated Caribbean participation in the programme and positions Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as a regional leader in facilitating access to international leadership development opportunities for youth.
The Consulate General views this partnership as an important component of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ broader economic diplomacy and human capital development agenda, aimed at equipping young Vincentians with the skills, networks, global exposure, and leadership competencies necessary to compete and succeed in an increasingly interconnected and knowledge-driven global economy.
Consul General Roland Matthews welcomed the initiative and highlighted its significance for the country’s future development.
“It gives me great pride to see twenty-six Vincentian students being afforded the opportunity to participate in the Leadership Initiatives Summer Programme hosted at Georgetown University during the summers of 2026 and 2027.
This partnership is a significant investment in the future of our nation and reflects the Government’s unwavering commitment to the education and development of our young people.
The Consulate was pleased to play an instrumental role in facilitating this partnership, and we remain committed to creating opportunities that empower Vincentians to excel on the global stage.
I congratulate the selected students and encourage them to embrace this remarkable opportunity. I have every confidence that they will return home equipped with new knowledge, enhanced leadership skills, and a renewed commitment to contributing to the continued development of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.”
The participation of these students underscores the importance of continued collaboration among government, educational institutions, diplomatic missions, and international partners in creating pathways for Vincentian youth to thrive.
The Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Consulate General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in New York extend appreciation to Leadership Initiatives, Georgetown University, educators, families, and all partners who contributed to making this opportunity possible. They reaffirm their commitment to expanding initiatives that empower the nation’s youth and strengthen Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ engagement with global partners.
