Statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs:
“His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, has proclaimed Wednesday, July 22, through Friday, July 24, 2026 as Three Days of National Mourning in honour of the victims of the M.V. Barima tragedy.
During this period, the National Flag shall be flown at half-mast on Government buildings and other appropriate locations.
Wednesday, July 22, 2026, will be observed as a National Day of Prayer, with a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance at the Kingston Seawall, Georgetown.
A Night of Reflection and Prayer will be held in Port Kaituma on Thursday, July 23, 2026, and in Mabaruma on Friday, July 24, 2026.
Religious organisations, civic groups and citizens across Guyana are also encouraged to host candlelight vigils and moments of prayer during the period of national mourning.
