The Opposition Peoples’ National Movement (PNM) is calling for the immediate resignation of the Attorney General, the Minister of Homeland Security, and the Commissioner of Police following the revocation of Preventive Detention Orders (PDOs) issued against Dominic and Genevieve Hadeed.
The revocation, announced earlier today by the Ministry of Homeland Security, followed what officials described as a “comprehensive review of all relevant legal, medical and public interest considerations”. According to the Ministry, the decision was informed by recommendations from the Constitution Review Tribunal and assessments conducted under the Emergency Powers Regulations, 2026.
Opposition Chief Whip and PNM Chairman Marvin Gonzales told the Express that the revocation justifies his party’s persistent demands for a full-scale investigation into how the state has used detention orders during the current State of Emergency.
Gonzales characterized the situation as a “travesty” and argued that the government lacks the evidence to support its previous allegations regarding threats to the lives of the Prime Minister and other government ministers.
“This current revocation demonstrates that there is more to uncover in the state’s use of PDO’s,” Gonzales stated, calling for the immediate revocation of the appointments of the Attorney General and the Minister of Homeland Security.
The PNM is also warning of significant legal and financial consequences for the country. Gonzales suggested that these actions by the state could “open up the floodgates” for litigation, potentially forcing taxpayers to fund hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation for citizens impacted by the government’s use of emergency powers.
In addition to the calls for ministerial resignations, Gonzales stated that the Commissioner of Police should consider whether he should tender his own resignation to the Police Service Commission.
As of today, the opposition continues to press for a full and independent investigation into the state’s use of preventive detention.
