The Government of Grenada has reached a major milestone in its renewable energy drive with the completion of the new solar plant in Limlair, Carriacou.
Training and testing of the facility are now underway, signaling the official commissioning of this critical infrastructure for Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Leslie Smith, Director of Energy within the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment & Renewable Energy, said the Ministry is satisfied with the new system.
The plant will be managed by the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) and will feed directly into GRENLEC’s grid to strengthen power supply for the sister islands.
Smith extended the Government’s sincere appreciation to the United Arab Emirates for providing 100% funding for the project. He also acknowledged the logistical support of the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government and other key partners who made the project possible.
“This completion and commissioning marks a major milestone for our energy transformation,” Smith stated. “It fits squarely within the Ministry’s ‘Solar for All’ Programme, which is focused on reducing electricity costs and expanding access to clean energy across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.”
As part of that programme, five (5) households in Carriacou have already been equipped with solar systems, helping families to lower their electricity bills while building greater energy resilience.
An official handing over ceremony is being planned in the coming weeks to formally mark the commissioning of the Limlair Solar Plant.
