Residents of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are advised to take precautions as the national Meteorological Service forecasts a weekend of shifting weather hazards, ranging from poor air quality due to Saharan dust to potential flash flooding from an approaching tropical disturbance.
As of Thursday, August 13, Saharan dust-haze and dry air continue to dominate the region, significantly limiting visibility and rainfall. For Friday, August 14, the forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with isolated showers, but the primary concern remains a thick haze.
Authorities have issued a weather advisory warning of poor air quality and have urged the public to take necessary health precautions. Fresh to occasionally strong northeasterly winds, reaching speeds of 30 to 45 km/h, are expected throughout the day.
The dust-haze is expected to begin thinning by Saturday, August 15, making way for a tropical disturbance. As this system approaches, the weather will transition to cloudy conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
The Met Office is urging residents and motorists particularly those in areas prone to landslides and flash flooding or near rivers and streams—to remain highly alert. During Saturday afternoon, winds may temporarily drop to 10–15 km/h and shift direction to the south-southeast as the disturbance crosses the islands.
