Contractors are pushing to complete emergency structural repairs on the Langley Park Government School after severe termite damage compromised the facility.
According to the Minister Shevern John, the school’s roof was heavily termite-infested, leaving the structure as “practically a shell”. The contractor warned that the building was a “disaster in the making,” noting that the rafters were so severely eaten out that they collapsed when pushed.
Despite a late start, the contracting team has been working aggressively to meet the reopening deadline. As of the report, workers had already secured all the plywood decking and begun galvanizing the roof. Final tasks include finishing the galvanization, painting, and putting the classrooms back together.
Officials expressed confidence that construction will wrap up over the weekend so the facility is ready for school on Monday morning. The Minister praised the crew for working tirelessly to ensure the campus remains a clean environment suitable for student learning.
Additionally, officials revealed that another building on the site requires repairs. Due to current time constraints, work on that secondary structure has been postponed until the school term closes. The extent of the damage has also raised questions regarding the level of facility maintenance performed in previous years.
