The Division of Sports and Physical Activity, operating under the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture, and Creative Industries, has officially launched the 2026–2027 National School Sports Program. Featuring restructured tournament formats, enhanced athlete care, and significant corporate backing, the new academic year promises to revolutionize student athletics across primary and secondary schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The official media launch brought together key government officials, education leaders, sporting executives, and media practitioners. The platform unveiled a comprehensive schedule of sporting events alongside structural reforms designed to raise local athletic standards to regional and international benchmarks.
The 2026–2027 school sports calendar officially begins on Thursday, September 24, 2026, with the SVG Inter-Schools Cross Country Championships. Football action will follow immediately on Saturday, September 26, with opening-day secondary school matches held at the Cumberland Playing Field. Secondary netball competitions will launch on September 29, while primary school football and netball will run from September 29 to November 15 and September 30 to November 14, respectively.

Several new sporting additions have been introduced to broaden student participation, with a deliberate emphasis on female involvement. These include a six-aside female football championship for primary and secondary levels, a one-day 3v3 basketball festival preceding the return of the standard 5v5 competition, a female talent identification cricket festival, and an inter-primary school road relay to build distance running experience early.
Early registration numbers demonstrate strong school engagement. In secondary football, 18 junior teams and 14 senior division teams have registered, alongside 20 primary school football teams. Netball features 17 junior and 10 senior secondary teams, plus 16 primary.
Newly appointed Coordinator of Sports and Physical Activity Mr. Roxell John outlined major operational changes aimed at maximizing athlete preparation and reducing instructional disruption.
- Weekly Zonal Preliminary Structure: Preliminary rounds for team sports will be compressed into focused, weekly zonal windows. Three out of six zones will play all preliminary matches over an 8-to-9-day period while other zones remain in the classroom, after which the remaining zones compete. Matches will start between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, creating a festive “day of sports” atmosphere for local communities, vendors, and supporters. This structure minimizes lost instructional time, streamlines venue management, and mimics regional tournament formats where teams compete in tight timeframes.
- Round of 16 Format: Top teams advancing from the preliminary zones will enter a newly instituted Round of 16 knockout stage, leading into quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place playoffs, and finals to afford student-athletes more match play.
- Three-Day Secondary Track & Field Finals: The secondary track and field finals will expand to a three-day schedule (Monday through Wednesday) featuring daily preliminaries, semifinals, and finals. This modern format aligns with international standards, helping coaches and athletes properly pace their performances.
To raise the standard of player welfare and venue organization, the division is deploying dedicated technical support:
- On-Site Medical Care: A qualified 5-member medical unit, augmented by sports science graduates, will be stationed at every competition venue to provide immediate first aid and physiological care.
- Venue Supervision: Each match venue will feature at least seven assigned personnel, including a dedicated venue supervisor responsible for court/field readiness, equipment, and administrative logistics.
- Media & Logistics: A dedicated division media team will cover all events, while shade tents and seating will be supplied across venues in partnership with the National Lotteries Authority (NLA). Division officials will also wear standardized uniforms to foster professionalism.
Following a comprehensive internal review of national performances at the Windward Islands School Games, the division is launching structured weekly Saturday training sessions starting September 26. Conducted in partnership with national sporting federations, these development hubs will operate at designated regional centers:
- Netball: Kingstown Netball Centre (in collaboration with the SVG Netball Association).
- Basketball: Bequia, Georgetown, and Bishop’s College Court (in collaboration with Blue Chip Academy).
- Football: Camden Park, Brighton, Georgetown, and Curtain fields (in collaboration with the SVG Football Federation).
- Volleyball: Dixon Hardcourt and Girls’ High School (GHS) Court.
Coordinator Roxell John confirmed that automatic team selection for past national athletes has been abolished. All prospective team members must earn their spots through merit, while appointed national discipline coaches will be required to submit six-month structured training plans spanning January to June.
