Seventy-two farmers from Regions 1 and 2 gathered at Mrs. Patricia Morris’ Farm in Belle Isle to evaluate the performance of eight tomato cultivars. The field demonstration was hosted following an invitation from the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI).
According to CARDI Country Representative Danowa Jackson, the primary objective of the gathering was to monitor and evaluate the progress of the eight distinct tomato varieties under trial. The initiative is being jointly implemented by the World Vegetable Center, CARDI, and the Extension and Advisory Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation.
Addressing the assembled farmers, Dr. Roland Schafleitner, Country Director of Biological Sciences at the World Vegetable Center, highlighted that the organization operates in the interest of boosting food security by expanding vegetable production capacity.
The field trial plot forms part of a broader development project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Representative Ming Xuan Lin from the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) was also in attendance to detail the ICDF’s ongoing involvement and role in supporting the agricultural initiative.
