The theme for CARICOM Energy Month 2026 “Harnessing Energy, Advancing Resilient Development,” reaffirms the Region’s acknowledgement of energy as a catalyst for sustainable growth, climate resilience, and economic transformation.
As Small Island and Low-Lying Coastal Developing States (SIDS), CARICOM Member States are among the most vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. At the same time, the volatility of energy prices has become an enduring feature. These converging challenges underscore the urgency of building energy systems that are sustainable, affordable, and resilient.
For CARICOM Member States, where climate resilience is fundamental to sustainable development and the well-being of future generations, this commitment must be transformed into concrete and measurable action.
That action begins with the Caribbean’s significant renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass, and marine energy. By harnessing these indigenous resources and diversifying our energy mix, we can strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on imported fuels, improve affordability, and support sustainable economic development. These investments must be complemented by modernised grids, energy storage technologies, and
resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding climate-related and other exogenous shocks.
Conventional energy sources will continue to play a significant role during the transition to clean and renewable technologies. Even though the Caribbean region accounts for less than one per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, we are committed to expanding renewable energy use, not only to help to reduce emissions, but also to strengthen energy security, conserve foreign exchange, create new economic opportunities, and advance achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
These outcomes require strong partnerships among the public and private sectors, development partners, academia, civil society, and local communities. Through collective action, innovation, investment, and knowledge-sharing, we can unlock the full potential of the Caribbean’s renewable energy resources, and build a more prosperous and resilient Community for present and future generations.
