Caribbean travel is getting more expensive as JetBlue implemented its second baggage fee hike of the year, raising the cost of checking a first bag to $50 each way for most economy passengers.
The updated pricing structure, which took effect on November 3, applies to travelers booking trips to and from the Caribbean, as well as routes across the United States, Canada, and Latin America.
The new $50 rate reflects an $11 jump compared to the start of the month and stands $15 higher than the price at the start of the year, translating to a 42% surge within a single year.
Passengers traveling during peak periods—including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays—face even steeper charges:
First checked bag: Costs $55 if paid more than 24 hours prior to departure, jumping to $60 within the final 24-hour window before takeoff.
Second checked bag: Costs $70 during off-peak periods, rising to $75 more than 24 hours in advance during peak periods, and reaching $85 within 24 hours of flight time.
In an emailed statement to the Associated Press, JetBlue stated that the fee adjustments are intended to help offset rising fuel and operating expenses, noting that the policy keeps base fares competitive while allowing customers to pay only for bags they need.
JetBlue is not alone in adjusting baggage rates amid fuel cost pressures tied to conflict in Iran. Following JetBlue’s initial fee increase in March, major competitors including Delta, United, American, and Southwest all introduced price increases of their own.
