Belfast, NORTHERN IRELAND: The Easter Bunny visited the Capital City of Belfast and encouraged the public and private sector, businesses and individuals across Northern Ireland to hop down to their local supermarket, independent retailer, shop, or go online and choose Fairtrade certified chocolate in support of Caribbean and African Fairtrade Cocoa producers.
Dr Christopher Stange – Consulate of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to Northern Ireland and Secretariat of the All Party Group on Fairtrade at Stormont Parliament said: “Buying Fairtrade chocolate makes a huge difference to the lives of cocoa farmers and their families in the developing world, through trade rather than aid.
“The Mark means the Fairtrade ingredients of the product have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations that meet Fairtrade social, environmental and economical standards. These are the protection of workers’ rights and the environment, ensuring no bonded or illegal child labour, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest back into their own community.”
Dr Stange added: “Farming is the pillar of the world. It’s a grave injustice that farmers work to produce what we eat, while many of them go hungry themselves. Utilising the power of shopping to ensure food security for the world’s most marginalised famers and workers through Fairtrade is a proactive step. Look for the Fairtrade Mark when shopping.”
Available Fairtrade chocolate brands are Divine, Green & Black’s, Kit Kat 4 Finger, Dairy Milk, Mars, Maltessers, Rawr, Raw Chocolate Co., Meaningful Chocolate Co., and Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer and The Co-operative own product lines.”
