The Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines says it is closely monitoring the weather situation in Jamaica and has made provisions for the safety of Vincentian students studying there.
Hurricane Mathew, now packing winds of 150 miles per hour, placing it at Category Four on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, will approach Jamaica on Monday.
Speaking with News784 on Saturday night, an official from the Ministry of Education told us that while the University of the West Indies Mona Campus has asked all International students to evacuate, the Jamaican Government has made provisions for the safety of those forced to remain, including Vincentian students.
The Bahamian Government airlifted all students studying in Jamaica at 10 PM on Saturday night via their national carrier, Bahamas Air.
The Education Official told News784 that once the weather passes and the school cannot function, all students would be brought home immediately, since the situation would then become a matter of survival.
In September of 1998, Hurricane Gilbert devastated Jamaica, leaving behind a death toll of more than 200 persons.
