The Ministry of Agriculture, through the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM) programme, has initiated a major Irrigation Project at Langley Park.
The Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM) are a support package for a number of banana-exporting countries from the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) group of states.
The objective is to facilitate these countries’ adjustment to a new trading environment.
Leroy Jackson, Agriculture Instructor in the Ministry of Agriculture, said the Langley Park Irrigation Project comes in response to concerns about the impact of the dry season on the local agricultural sector.
Mr. Jackson said irrigation plays a vital role in ensuring sustained food production in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Ministry is taking steps to protect local plant species through a Germplasm conservation project.
A few key facts:
- The BAM are designed to foster competitiveness and encourage diversification. They can also support activities addressing broader impacts of the adjustment.
- They finance projects in Belize, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname.
