(By Ernesto Cooke) – The Adelphi Secondary School would be celebrating its 47th Anniversary on Friday 5th October 2018.
On Monday 1st October the institution began a week of activities under the theme “With hands and minds we strive”.
Speaking with News784, Miss Cleo Rogers a member of the Anniversary Committee said that on Wednesday 3rd, a major activity took place in the form of a career day.
Rogers said this was key in the celebration because educators at the school have realized students are not very much aware of what’s going on in society in terms of employment.
“We know the current situation where the Government cannot employ everyone, so we are trying to make them aware that there are opportunities both in government, private and entrepreneurship sector”.
Rogers further told News784 that the activity is being used especially to fit the school curriculum.
“When students get to form five they would be able to choose wisely, in respect of colleges and universities, I would also say this, some students are already making subject choices while in form three”.
Rogers noted that telling students about the different career choices is not enough, but bringing in the business houses and personal makes a world of difference.
“We invited a wide variety of persons from Mechanic to Seamstress, Hospitality sector, Credit Unions, Police Department which includes several divisions, Insurance companies, NTRC, Accounting firms”.
Rogers told News784 that Personnel from the Prisons was invited to speak to several students.
“There are some students who are a bit hard headed, and we wanted them to get a real-life snapshot of what being behind bars is like, so they would not want to venture there”.
Rogers expressed thanks to all stakeholders who have been supporting the school over the years and have asked others to come onboard including past students.
The school which opened its doors in 1973 have produced several outstanding citizens including, Mr Baldwin Johnney Branch Manager of GECCU Georgetown, Mr Israel Bruce Attorney at Law, and Mrs Shermalon Kirby-Gordon, Advisor at the Corporate Relations Department of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in St Kitts.
The school currently has 198 students on its roll.
