Former Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has voiced strong criticism regarding operational disorganization at Argyle International Airport (AIA), citing widespread passenger frustration over food shortages in the departure lounge and questioning recent changes to service contracts.
According to Gonsalves, outgoing JetBlue passengers were recently left angry after discovering a lack of hot meal options in the airport’s upstairs departure area.
He noted that the transition of concession slots—previously operated by “High Flyers”—has been plagued by delays. The only active food vendor upstairs was a small coffee shop operated by Miss Kagbala, which offered light items such as cookies, sandwiches, patties, and soft drinks, but no substantial meals.
Gonsalves also expressed skepticism over the assignment of one of the major food slots to the Police Welfare Association, questioning whether a police association has the capacity and expertise to manage an eatery in an international terminal. He emphasized that an international facility cannot function properly without coherent management and reliable dining services for travelers.
In addition to dining concerns, Gonsalves raised questions about transparency surrounding the airport’s cleaning contracts. He highlighted that the previous cleaning provider, managed by Noel Jackson, had been replaced by Vincy Clean for the main terminal, while newly formed cleaning entities associated with the Teachers Union and the Public Service Union were assigned to the control tower and cargo terminal.
Gonsalves called for public clarification on the tendering process to ensure contracts were awarded through proper independent procedures.
Urging airport management and vendors to resolve these issues swiftly, Gonsalves stressed the necessity of upholding international standards to maintain the facility’s reputation.
