The by-pass road that was constructed about two years ago as a detour around a section of the main highway outside the Argyle International Airport, has been closed after it collapsed on Thursday, November 10th 2016.
Minister of Transport and Works, Julian Francis speaking on Thursday afternoon on the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC Radio) noted that the collapse of the road resulted from soil slippage in the area, triggered by torrential rains this country has been experiencing in recent days.
He said there had been soil slippage from early Thursday morning, therefore the Chief Engineer Brent Bailey who visited the area, advised that the road is closed to vehicular traffic.
He said motorists going north from the city to take a detour through Calder and Mesopotamia, and re-join the Windward highway at Peruvian Vale.
While vehicles traveling south to Kingstown are asked to turn right at Peruvian Vale, travel through Yambou and Mesopotamia then either over Belmont and on to Calliaqua or through Calder.
Minister Francis said he cannot give a definite timeframe as to how long the road will be closed.
He is appealing to motorists traveling on the Windward side of the island to exercise caution and drive carefully along the detours.
