- Bahamas pushes to reduce crime following US travel advisory
The U.S. Embassy issued a security notice after the Bahamas recorded at least 18 slayings this year. Authorities insist they are cracking down on crime.
The number of weekend homicides grew to 19, and police held a news conference on Sunday to discuss recent operations that seized firearms, ammo, and drugs. None of the murders targeted foreigners.
The U.S. Embassy reported that “retaliatory gang violence” had caused most of the fatalities on New Providence and Grand Bahama.
“Murders have occurred at all hours, including in broad daylight on the streets,” it reported last week.
U.S. officials stated the high homicide rate mostly affects locals.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force recorded 128 homicides in 2021–2022, up 8% from 119 in 2021.
